Ravenclaw Naming Traditions

How Ravenclaw names are built

Astronomy supplies more Ravenclaw names than any other source. Lyra, Vega, Elara, Selene, Astraea and Corvus all name something in the night sky, and the star-naming tradition that pure-blood families follow throughout the wizarding world finds its most natural home in this house.

The second source is Greek scholarship. Hypatia taught mathematics in Alexandria. Ptolemy mapped the fixed stars. Thales predicted an eclipse. Alethea comes from aletheia, a word for truth built out of the negation of forgetting.

Roman names appear where the bearer built something: Vitruvius set the proportions of architecture, Quintilian set the shape of rhetoric.

Blood status shapes the surname, not the first name

Old Ravenclaw families carry Norman surnames: Beauchamp, Belmont, Corbeau. These came over in 1066 and stayed in the wizarding gentry, which is why they sound French among a set of English neighbours.

Newer Ravenclaw lines carry trade and place names instead. Bookbinder and Inkpen name the tools. Ravensworth and Winterbourne name the ground.

Names by era

The 1890s produced the full classical set: Aloysius, Erasmus, Theodora, Philippa. Wizarding scholarship at that point still ran on Latin and Greek, and parents named accordingly.

Later Ravenclaws shorten. Clio, Enid, Lyra and Vega carry the same freight in one or two syllables.
